Barkisland v Shepley Drakes Huddersfield League Premiership Saturday 25th April 2009 Woodfield, Barkisland
After a few late nerves, Shepley secured a deserved three wicket win over a strong Barkisland side over in Calderdale. Opening bowlers Danny Glover (2-67) and Romain Grenville (3-35) started with four straight maidens, before Grenville produced three wickets in seven balls to leave Barkisland appearing to be in deep trouble. The classy opener Paul Winrow remained, however, so more work to do. Winrow and Robinson looked dangerous before captain Glover introduced the deceptive medium pace of Don Bandula Ranjith and the off spin of SP Singh. Both exerted pressure by immaculate line and length, but it was Ranjith who took the honours with an impressive 5-26, whilst Singh's nine overs on a small ground went for just sixteen runs as Barkisland, helped by a late flurry of boundaries from Winrow (92), posted 181. In reply Shepley got off to another solid start, with Sam Haigh (21) and SP Singh putting on 30 against some good aggressive bowling from the Barkisland pace attack. For once Singh (11) was out cheaply, quickly followed by Tim Rees. Nigel Hoyle was promoted to come in at four and played the perfect innings in the circumstances, holding the innings together with a dogged 29, and staying put for well over twenty overs, until the score reached 156. Whilst Nigel anchored the innings, the strokemakers enjoyed themselves. Grenville hit 39, with just ten scoring shots, and Ranjith 34* peppered with boundaries. Ash Brothers and Danny Glover fell quickly to put the wind up the watching committee men, before Steve Sullivan hit consecutive boundaries to see Shepley home. A good win against a good side.
