Shepley v Carlton Heavy Woollen Cup First Round Sunday 19th April 2009 Marsh Lane, Shepley
Shepley started its Heavy Woollen Cup campaign with a convincing 178 run win over Carlton at Marsh Lane. Batting first, openers SP Singh & Sam Haigh once again got the innings off to a good start, putting on 80 before Haigh was run out for 23. In came Time Rees (81) to take the attack to Carlton with a return to his best form as he and Singh put on 123 for the second wicket. Two quick wickets followed Tim's departure, but Ashley Brothers (20) and Nigel Hoyle (26) hit out to take the final score to an impressive 298-6. At the other end, Singh sailed serenely on, carrying his bat for a high-class 122*. Carlton's reply got off to a steady start until pace men Romain Grenville and Chris Cox sent back three batsmen in quick succession, including a stunning slip catch by Nigel Hoyle, leaving the visitors on 33-3. Grenville ended with 3-15 from his ten overs, whilst Cox continued to show his great promise with 3-56. Ranjith (2-19) and Singh (2-14) bowled good spells as Carlton struggled, whilst Sam Denton's five overs cost just six runs.
