£50,000 CRICKET HERITAGE PROJECT

Dr Peter Davies - Honorary Historian of the Huddersfield Cricket League - has received a £43,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to enquire into the heritage and social history of cricket in Kirklees. It is the first time that this body had awarded money to a sport-related project. 

Peter - who teaches History at the University of Huddersfield - is very excited about the project. His employers have also contributed £7,000 to the study. 

Essentially, the project is about cricket, community and the local heritage:  

- It will establish cricket archives - including an oral history 'bank' - in Huddersfield town library. 

- It will employ 'community' photographers and artists to depict local cricketing landscapes. 

- Educational, heritage-orientated signage will be erected in and around local cricket grounds. 

-Local libraries will host exhibitions on a cricket/community theme and leaflets will be made available to the general public. 

- Activity packs on a cricket/community theme will be produced for local schools. 

- An interactive website will be created to explain and illuminate the project. 

Peter is particularly interested in old club minute books and scorebooks, and also in antique cricketing artefacts from the area.
